Starting
Your Own Business by Waylon
Starting your own business can be a daunting task
but you may find that it is easier than it seems if you follow
some basic guidelines. If you are well organized and determined,
you can definitely start on the road to self employment. Many
of us dream of working for ourselves but few try to take on the
challenge.
In order to avoid being overwhelmed by starting your own business
you may want to plan far in advance. Good planning is the foundation
to a successful venture. The best way to go about this is to
make lists. This may seem a little simple but starting your own
business takes a lot of thought. The lists can help your sort
things out.
Once things are down on paper they seem concrete. If you mill
ideas over and over in your head you find that they are either
lost or running like a hamster in a treadmill. Writing down your
goals as well as strategies of reaching those goals is a great
way to begin starting your own business.
Goals are the key. They help you stay focused. For example,
I wanted to start a small personal portrait company. The concept
was really simple. Clients would send their pictures and I would
make drawings from the images. However, I quickly lost focus
on the project.
By
the time I was three months into the small business I was ready
to run. I discovered that starting your own business can’t
really be done overnight. The orders were out of control. I had
no timeframe and I also didn’t know how to deal with the
fact that I under bid my initial project.
I really wanted to get a strong client base so I offered the
portrait service for next to nothing. Unfortunately starting
your own business does require some generous sacrifices here
and there. The problem is that this special price was expected
all the way around. Since most of my drawing gigs were through
word-of-mouth my initial price was quoted over and over again.
When people discovered that the prices went up they were really
disappointed. If I would have planned a little better I could
have avoided a big mess. I may take one starting a new business
in the future but not anytime soon. If I do I will make sure
to plan things out much better.
Starting your own business takes a lot of thought and some foresight.
Maybe a couple of failures are part of the whole thing as well.
